To the Editor:
The COVID-19 crisis has presented an unprecedented challenge to the health and economic welfare of our citizens. We need strong, knowledgeable, and compassionate leadership in our elected officials to ensure that our most vulnerable residents are protected. This is why we are strong supporters of Cinde Warmington for Executive Council in District 2. She has been a healthcare attorney for twenty years and will be a strong advocate for healthcare as a basic human right. With health and human services being the largest share of our state budget, we need a councilor who has the knowledge and experience to deal with the healthcare crisis and its impact on our economic recovery. In the view of many respected economists, this dual crisis will be long-lasting and may even cause major shifts in how businesses operate going forward.
As a case in point: the August 10 Concord Monitor reported that an estimated 96,000 people, or 11% of New Hampshire’s adult population, were uninsured. The interdependence of economics and healthcare meant those affected by job loss also lost health insurance as more than half of Granite Staters are insured through their employer. New Hampshire saw about a 40% increase in the number of adults becoming uninsured as a consequence of layoffs.
Let’s look at how Cinde would protect the citizens of New Hampshire. She supports expanding access to affordable healthcare, safeguarding Planned Parenthood funding, and ensuring fair wages and worker’s rights program as well as paid family and medical leave. Its no wonder then that she has been endorsed by the New Hampshire AFL-CIO which represents over 25,000 working families. Notably, her opponent is against supporting Planned Parenthood funding, against increasing the minimum wage, against a statewide family and medical leave—all of which hurt and disadvantage many of our workers who are struggling with job/income loss and health risks.
We hope you vote to improve the resiliency of all the citizens of New Hampshire in these difficult times. Cinde Warmington is the best candidate that will look out for all of us.
